The program is intended for undocumented immigrants who were brought to the US by their parents when they were children. Recently, we applied for DACA for one such client, who arrived in the US with his parents as a child. Due to the extensive backlog with such immigration cases, coupled with restrictive immigration policies integrated by the new administration, the political climate made it difficult to get DACA protections, and our client’s application was unnecessarily delayed. After providing USCIS with all the evidence and documentation requested, we began a very lengthy waiting period that took over two years. Eventually, after a rigorous process, our client was finally approved and became a recipient of DACA status. This allowed him protection from deportation, the opportunity to apply for a social security card, and approval for work authorization.
