On March 10th 2021, Congress passed the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021. This federal relief bill is slated to provide stimulus payments of up to $1400 to qualifying U.S. citizens and green card holders who are married to noncitizens. Noncitizens who filed their taxes using an individual taxpayer identification number will qualify for these direct stimulus payments and should be receiving them around the same time as citizens. This is similar to the relief package which was passed in December 2020 where direct stimulus payments of up to $600 were paid out to both citizens and some noncitizens. While this bill does not provide direct stimulus payments to immigrant families who did not file using an individual taxpayer identification number, it is providing payments to at least some of the immigrant families who need assistance. The relief package also includes aid to state, local, city, and tribal governments for Covid-19 vaccinations and testing with the goal of helping alleviate some of the financial burden which Covid-19 has caused these governments.
