World Refugee Day is celebrated every year on June 20th. This is a day to commemorate the resilience and courage displayed by refugees and their families each and every day. While this event is only observed once a year, you can make a difference in the lives of refugees every day. Here are 8 ways you can support refugees in our community and all over the world, even during the pandemic.

Stay informed + Learn

There are a ton of great informational resources available online to help you learn about the refugee crisis, current efforts and campaigns, and the effects of various policies.

Here is a brief list of resources to start off with:

Attend Events

Even though there aren’t in-person events happening this year, many virtual events are still taking place.

Volunteer

Volunteers are an essential part of the prosperity of organizations like the American Civic Association. We offer volunteer opportunities year-round and are always looking for unique ways to connect the community. Sign up to volunteer here or send us an email at [email protected].

Offer translations

The translation of various materials helps make information on services and events more accessible to our community. If you are fluent in two or more languages and are able to offer translations, we would love to hear from you! Email us at [email protected]

Hire Refugees

Refugees have a strong work ethic, as well as diverse experience and a desire to contribute to their communities. If you are able, consider going to We Hire Refugees and registering your company as hiring refugees.

Donate

Monetary donations are the most flexible form of support to an organization. Donating ensures that the money is put towards the most pressing project at the time and this allows organizations to do their best work. Even the smallest amount can make a difference! If you are able to, make a recurring donation to show your continued support.

Our donation page can be found here! Your donation helps provide services and programs such as legal consultations, translations, refugee services, local events, and citizenship assistance!

Advocate

There are ways to act as an advocate for refugees even if you don’t have the resources to donate. Signing petitions, calling your local and state representatives, and raising awareness in your community are all ways to help refugees that don’t take much time. To get started, here’s a link to No Muslim Ban Ever., an organization fighting the Trump administration’s ban on refugees from majority Muslim countries.

Share Resources

Be sure to pass along any resources you come across on social media. Follow organizations that cover policy updates and refugee services in order to get the most up-to-date and reliable information. You never know who may be looking for the resources that you share. No audience is too small!
